We would like to remind everybody that this weekend is Santa Cruz Mountains Passport on Saturday as well as the January pick up weekend. Our tasting room hours our 5p to 9p on Friday and Noon to 5P on Saturday and Sunday. We would also like to remind our wine club members that any wines purchased over the club selection will be an additional 5% off. Our Club selections this month are the 2011 Santa Clara Valley Merlot as well as the 2011 Santa Cruz Mnts. Syrah. Change it up if you would like something else. See you this weekend!
We took Spencer to The SF airport for his trip to Thailand on Monday morning. He arrived with no drama and is now enjoying a wonderful country with Natali.
We have just received the results from our wine submission to the San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition. We did quite well this year. We are proud to announce we garnered a Bronze for our 2011 Santa Cruz Mnts. Syrah. Silvers for our 2012 Merlot, 2012 Pinot Noir, and 2012 Concerto. We are very excited to announce that we were awarded a Double Gold for our 2012 Petite Sirah from Paso Robles. Thank you Bob Pettis from Roadrunner Farms for such wonderful fruit. We will be attending the wine pouring at Fort Mason on Feb. 13th to show off our prize winning wine.
Well its the Holly Daze season again. We think a nice bottle of wine makes a perfect gift for that special friend. If your out doing some hectic shopping stop by the winery and try a tasting flight. I suspect it will make your shopping more enjoyable. We offer a flight of at least five wines for a mere $5.00. For a limited time only we are also including a shear red bag to dress up that bottle to put under the tree.
We also are happy to announce that we have already expanded into the back half of our building. This expansion doubles our floor space and will allow us to bring all of our operation in house. We are still in the bonding stage but expect that to be completed in the very near future.

California Wine of the Week: Russian Ridge 2011 Concerto Blend and the art of dark fruit

Owners and winemakers Scott and Joan Townsend say their wines speak for themselves, and they shout quality: balanced, fruit-forward, yet restrained where it counts. New on the scene, Russian Ridge Winery has opened a tasting room in San Carlos recently to showcase rich, dark syrahs, cabernet sauvignons, merlots and petit sirahs, and refreshing pinot grigios and chardonnays.
The winemaker >> Along with assistant winemaker Spencer Townsend, the Townsends source fruit from the Santa Cruz Mountains, Santa Clara Valley, Paso Robles and Napa to make single-vineyard varietals and blends. The syrah is restrained, the pinot noir needs a little more time in bottle and the cabernet sauvignon has a nice profile, which will develop with age. The Concerto blend shows best that these winemakers love of fruit runs deep, and they’re serious about creating well-balanced wines.
Why like it >> This blend is a dark symphony, with melodic undertones and throbbing beat. The darkness begins in the ruby color and deep fruit aromas, persisting throughout the vintage. The full-bodied wine is brimming with cranberry, plum, raspberry and a bit of strawberry. Pepper, cardamom, chocolate and spices offer counterpoint. Oak, tannins and fruit are all well-blended in this intense, pleasurable wine.

Well the 2014 vintage is in the barrels.
We had a tremendous amount of fun working in our new winery. It was a bit cramped but we managed.
We started with the Pinot Noir from Summit Road in mid September. We pressed the Pinot Noir off to settling tanks and got ready for an intense weekend. It started with the Merlot from Dan and Therese Martin @ Half Moon Vineyards. We helped load up the bins for Katheryn Kennedy, as there pick started before ours, under a 100 degree sun. We finally got loaded up with our fruit and headed for the winery around 3pm. We finished the crush, destemming, and analysis by 10pm. We headed home and grabbed a little sleep. I headed out for Paso Robles @ 2am to arrive at daybreak. We loaded up the Petite Sirah from Linda and Bob Pettis’ Roadrunner Farm and headed for the winery around 9am. We arrived around 1pm and started the processing and analysis all over again. We finished up around 8pm. Headed home to grab some more sleep only to get up at 2am Monday morning to go to Fiddletown to pick up our Zinfandel from Yvonne and Gino Rinaldi. We were picked before Rombauer so were able to get an early start back to the winery. Big “Thank You” goes out to Rombauer and Gino for that early start! We finished up the crush around 8pm. Off to bed for a long deserved sleep. Fortunately for us my brother Mitch flew in from Michigan the next day for an intense three week wine boot camp session. We picked him up from SFO around noon and had him pumping wine to barrel by 2pm. He also helped us paint the outside of the building to get the winery ready for our Grand Opening. We will be forever grateful for his immense help during our first crush in our new winery. As each wine finished its fermentation we pressed it off to settle in tank to go through its secondary fermentation. Our next wine to come in was our Cabernet Sauvignon from Therese and Dan. We also picked up our Cabernet Franc at the same time. We racked the Petite Sirah, Zinfandel and Merlot wines in tank to barrels. The next fruit to come in was the Michael Mann Merlot and Malbec. This fruit was processed and analysis complete by 8pm. Finally around the end of October our last varietal Petit Verdot was processed and put to barrel by the 12th of November.
The crush this year was around 3 weeks early due to the warm spring. We had a fairly even growing season with a few heat spikes. The end of the growing season did not have the usual rain worries that sometimes drives the pick. We had the opportunity to pick when we wanted to with additional hang time to intensify the fruit flavors.
We think the wines for this year will be exceptional.
Joan was there for almost every destemming and crush getting elbow deep in the sweet juice making it a grand family affair. Thank You Joan for all your financial and emotional support as well.
I would also like to thank Mitch for his efforts and humor on those long days. Hope we didn’t tucker you out to much.
Working with Spencer for the past 4 vintages has been fun and rewarding. I could not have done this vintage or any of the others for that matter without him. He is becoming an accomplished winemaker. I have learned a lot from him as well. So the biggest Thank You goes out to Spence.

We will still be open from noon to 5pm every Saturday and Sunday. We will also be open every Friday evening from 5pm to 9pm. Last Friday of the month we will be open 5pm to 10pm.
We have started our crush this year with our Pinot Noir from Summit rd. We will be pressing it off the must this weekend 9/6/14. Stop by for a tasting and maybe the aroma of the fermentation will still be lingering in the air. We do also have a very small batch of estate Chardonnay fermenting.

We will not be pouring at the winery this Saturday the 21st. We will be open Sunday the 22nd and the following weekend 28th and 29th.
We will be open Friday evening the 27th for tasting and wine by the glass. Stop by, have a glass of wine and relax a little. Head over to Devils Canyon Brewery for a beer and some fine tunes. Grab some grindage at the food trucks. Wander back to close out the evening with another glass of wine and unwind with your wine out on the winery patio. By a bottle for the table with your friends.
